Ballin?

I was ecstatic to open this month’s Wine Spectator and see quite a few of my favorite, more obscure, wines featured there.

In addition to Bedrock Wine Co., (Zin made from vines over 100 years old!), Brundlmeyer Riesling from Austria (each of these wines garnering 90+ points), a small production vineyard, Alpha Omega is also there.

In an article titled “Tackling a Love of Wine” the Spectator interviews the football star, Keyshawn Johnson. Of course he has his own wine coming out (who doesn’t?), but what piqued my interest was his list of favorite Napa wines. There were, of course, the obvious picks - Caymus, Opus, Harlan…but what caught MY attention was Alpha Omega. Available only through their wine club.
Now, to be fair, he doesn’t say which wine produced by Alpha Omega available only to club members rests comfortably in his cellar,
BUT, I can tell you that Wines and More RI has the Alpha Omega Napa Propriety Red Blend resting comfortably in OUR Cellar Selections.

A rich, opulent blend of Cabernet, Merlot, Cab Franc and Petit Verdot, it has smooth tannin, complex fruit and spice, with a silky mouthfeel.

Interested? So was I. After all, who doesn’t want to be a baller in the NFL?

“Everyday” White

For all of you Dave Matthews Fans (me included!) - this is for you. Dave’s new White Blend - The Dreaming Tree “Everyday” - and I’ll be singing it for the rest of the day! :)
This is blend of Gewurz, Riesling, Viogner…and Albarino. The Albarino gives a nice, crisp acidity, brightening and lightening up the wine, making it perfect for summer (tour) ;)

A to Z Wineworks

We have featured a couple of wines from A to Z Wineworks in our seminars, and you guys know how great they are. I am pleased (and that is an understatement) to tell you that we have received two very limited production wines just in time for Easter.

A to Z Riesling - an off-dry riesling with lime, tangerine, mineral and floral notes, they really knocked it out of the ballpark this year. It does have ageability, but who can wait that long?…better grab a few bottles…one for now, one for later ;)

A to Z Rose - this rose is a deeply colored wine, with all the promise that color implies - juicy strawberry, melon and raspberry, it also has hints of fresh herbs like rosemary and thyme. A full bodied rose for the red wine drinkers!

Rose!

Rose!!

The Rose of the season has arrived in our store, and I couldn’t be more excited!!
I look forward to rose season ALMOST as much as I look forward to summer. Even though it just snowed, drinking my first glass of rose last night filled me with happy, sunny thoughts.
Chateau d’esclans Whispering Angel is filled with flavor, strawberry, watermelon and rose petals, with soft body and just enough acidity to make your mouth water.
If you need another reason to pick up a bottle of this lovely wine. it is a perfect pairing for Easter ham.

Breaking the Wine Jargon Barrier

It seems to me, that lately, it is getting harder and harder to keep up with the new catchphrase, latest wine descriptor or, honestly, even wondering if you are supposed to like drinking a wine with a “bedrock of graphite structure”. Wine is a liquid right?

While I do appreciate the art of the written word, sometimes it’s just nice to know what a wine is all about without having to read an ode to the latest Bordeaux.

Perhaps I’m being a little irreverant here. But wine is for everybody, for every day people and every day enjoyment. And even I roll my eyes sometimes at the latest “well endowed” favorite.

Not to say that there isn’t a place for flowery words and descriptions and very serious wine. There is a time and place for everything, every wine and every palate.

That being said, I offer a breakdown of a review in layman’s terms:

“This is stone cold shut down right now” Translation: this wine isn’t ready to drink. You should cellar it.

“an echo of petrichor…that hints at the aromatic fireworks to come with cellaring” Translation: you know how you can smell rain coming? That is petrichor. So basically, the aromatics you get in this bottle are just a hint of what they will turn into after the wine has had some time in the bottle, which are going to knock your socks off.

“sappy tongue coating pastis” Translation: full bodied juicy anise flavor

“loaded with grip” Translation: has lots of tannin

“girders of charcoal coated grip” Translation - more tannin, maybe a little smoky

“tannnin” Translation: that drying sensation in your mouth

“bramble” Translation: a blackberry bush

Now that we have SOME clarity here, go grab a bottle and see if you can create your own review. Be creative. Post it here if you want, but most of all, have fun.

Cheers!
